Keyword analyzer, generator, Wordtracker -
What it can and can't do

As a keyword analyzer or keyword generator Wordtracker has some limitations.

I cover what it can and can't do. In other sections I look at using it, the data it provides and how it compares with three other keyword generator tools.

Probably the most widely known tool, Wordtracker features a keyword generator, keyword analyzer and includes a keyword bidding analyzer.

It's an online keyword generator & keyword analyzer service that enables you to query a database of around 328 million keyword's and phrases recently used by some search engine users.

I say some Internet users, because it doesn't represent queries by all users, as I show later.

Wordtracker - What it can do for you

  1. It provides other keyword phrases you'd not thought of.
  2. It can tell the popularity of words through the traffic they generate.
  3. It tells you the competition for those words.
  4. It gives wrongly spelled words with possible lower competition.
  5. It helps to decide about keyword bidding on 5 PPC engine's.
  6. It provides data in a csv file for use in a spreadsheet analyzer.

Wordtracker - What it can't do for you

  1. It doesn't decide the keyword phrases you should use.
  2. It can't tell how many visitors you'll get by using your keyword's.
  3. It does not provide all your keyword's.
  4. A keyword phrase not found could still be in use elsewhere.

Whilst Wordtracker gives representative results as a keyword generator & analyzer, it doesn't have direct access to all engine databases.

Wordtracker gets a lot of its analyzer data from major metacrawlers such as www.metacrawler.com & www.dogpile.com that get their data from engine's like Teoma, Yahoo and Google.

So when Wordtracker returns zero queries, it does not mean the keyword phrase is not in use on the Internet, it could exist in other databases.

Metacrawler & Dogpile from which Wordtracker gets its data, represent only a very small percentage of the total search traffic on the Internet.

From Wordtracker's own information, with a database of 328 million searches over a rolling 8 week cycle it means there's on average 328/(8wks or 56days) or 5.86 million searches per day.

They further estimate Google has 112 million searches per day and a 35% share of Internet traffic. That makes for a total of 320 million searches per day over the entire Internet and the capture of Wordtracker's database would sample around 1.8% of the total searches on the Internet.

In a web page example, the keyword phrase "child wooden toy" gave zero queries on Wordtracker.

Doing an exact match query for "child wooden toy" on Metacrawler gave 99 results on Yahoo, 129,400 on Teoma and 70 on Google.

Although an exact match query was requested from Teoma several times, it seems that's not what it returned. 129,400 results seems like a broad match. Broad match being any combination of the three words.

The same exact query on Dogpile gave 19 results on Yahoo, 22 on Teoma and 150 from Google.

A direct query on Teoma gave 299 results, on Google 255 and on MSN 90. A direct query on Yahoo.com gave 415 results.

The point being made here is that hundreds of pages exist using this keyword phrase on the crawlers from which Wordtracker's analyzer gets it's results.

With this many pages using this keyword phrase does no one use the term "child wooden toy" to find them ?

If they do, the data did not show up in Wordtracker's database yet. Perhaps these sites are using a keyword phrase that no one uses, at least not in the last 8 weeks for which Wordtracker holds data.

A query on Overture using a different keyword analyzer revealed 334 searches on this term in the past month.
