Already have your own list ? Then copy & paste them directly into step 3. Using the competition analyzer it's possible to refine the query to various engine's for the keyword phrases. The competition analyzer shows how many other web pages exist also using the same keyword's. The higher the number, the more the competition and the less chance of your page being found. You also get a measure of the keyword effectiveness with the Wordtracker Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI. You want a high KEI number on your chosen keyword phrase. The KEI generator compares the number of times a keyword appeared in the database with the number of web pages in competition. So to get a high KEI requires a higher number of searches or a lower number of pages in competition, or both. The advice of Wordtracker is that the KEI generator figure should be above 10 to be worth considering. It's my experience you have to be looking in the 1000's for competitive keywords when there are a lot of web pages using them. The competition analyzer works on 8 global engine's, (Altavista, Lycos, Google, Alltheweb, Teoma, MSN, Hotbot and Yahoo. You can also look on 3 global directories (Yahoo, Open Directory and Looksmart) and 5 Pay-Per-Click (PPC) engine's (Overture, Findwhat, Bay9, Goclick and Searchboss). Now that Yahoo owns Overture, Altavista & Alltheweb among others it could be interesting to see how this changes the results served. Will they all start to come from the same source ?
You can only look with Wordtracker on any two engine's at a time for up to 100 keyword's or phrases at a time. Searching on the PPC providers is using Wordtracker as a keyword bidding tool because it shows the level of advertisers bids being made on your keyword's. Using the comprehensive analyzer, displays the results in a list with check boxes by the side of each keyword or phrase. When getting more than 100, say 250 keyword phrases, it can be a chore to tick or un tick a lot of boxes because the competition analyzer only handles 100 keyword's or phrases at a time. In this example to analyze all 250 phrases would require checking each of 100 boxes, submit them, then checking another 100 boxes, submit, then check another 50. Luckily it's not necessary to individually uncheck all boxes, there is a single button to do that. Most of the time querying the major global engine's is enough. With this example I chose Google and MSN as according to Wordtracker they account for more than 55% of the traffic.
For this example I chose "wooden toys", "handmade wooden toys", "quality wooden toys", "childs toy", & "child toys". The best results were obtained for "wooden toys". On MSN "wooden toys" had 387,914 pages in competition, with a KEI of 1.113, on Google 2.37 million pages and a KEI of 0.182. The lower KEI on Google comes from the much higher number of pages in competition in Google's databases. Using the 94 relevant keyword phrases from the Wordtracker keyword generator for the term "child toy", a query on the database showed 86 with search counts and 8 with zero counts. If your not finding keyword phrases with a high KEI on the major engine's, it may well be better on some of the smaller ones where there's fewer pages in competition. You would then need an optimized web site design tailored toward your chosen search engine's. In this example less than 81,000 pages are in competition on Hotbot, Altavista, Lycos and Alltheweb so they've all a better KEI. Aim for a KEI better than 20 ....... if you can get it. In cases where there are high numbers of web pages in competition the KEI generator figure needs to be in the 100's if not 1000's for some terms All the results can be emailed to you or copied & pasted into Word or Excel or exported as a delimited file in order to use a program like Microsoft Excel as a further analyzer.
From the Wordtracker analyzer results on this example, more works required to find good keyword's. Or to use a marketing term niche keyword's. It's the niche relevant keyword phrases that take lot of time to find, but it's worth it, because they bring targeted visitors. In the final part on keyword generator's & keyword analyzer's:A keyword analyzer - Which results can you believe, Wordtracker, Adword Analyzer or Niche Finder ? I explain why there are different results between these analyzer's, apply some corrections and see if one keyword analyzer is enough. The conclusions on each generator & analyzer will impact the way you should think about using them. Click here to start using Wordtracker
