Finding the best keywords for your business and choosing the right ones for which you stand any chance of securing a high ranking on Google requires you to avoid the following seven all to often frequent mistakes.
keyword suggestion mistakesMistake 1: Not doing any keyword research Mistake 2: Thinking you know the words people use to find what your site offers People often use words and phrases to search with that you may never think of. The order in which they type those words into a search engine and whether they use singular, plural or the wrong spelling of words are also very important, especially to search engines. Mistake 3: Choosing single keywords based on the website topic or business you are in This is like choosing the word "golf" or "shoes" and expecting to get 1000's of visitors to your site looking for anything to do with golf or shoes ... it will not happen anytime soon. Mistake 4: Choosing keywords because lots of people use them on a search engine Just because during keyword research you discover there are 10's of 1,000's of people searching using a particular keyword phrase is not a sound basis for choosing that phrase. If it's a popular used search term it will more than likely have a lot (millions) of other web sites competing to attract the same visitor traffic. Mistake 5: Not taking enough (or any) account of competing web sites Before choosing any keyword phrase to use on your web pages you need to determine what chance you have of beating the competition that already rank highly on a search engine for that keyword phrase. If you can't beat the competition there is little point in targeting that keyword suggestion, since the search engines won't send you any visitors for it anyway. Mistake 6: Not knowing how to use keyword phrases Assuming the right keyword phrases have been chosen using them incorrectly or not effectively within the web site and on web pages will dilute any impact they have on a search engine. The right keywords will still not get you a 1st page ranking on Google. Mistake 7: Leaving it all to someone else Blindly trusting all your keyword research and choice of keywords to someone else and taking no interest in the process because it's too difficult or time consuming is a recipe for poor results or almost certain failure.
Choosing keyword suggestions that are relevant to what you offerBeginners will have a hard time scoring a 1st page ranking on a major search engine like Google for what are known as short-tailed keyword phrases like "real estate", "children’s clothing" or "golf". There is simply too much competition for these types of phrases from web sites that are better optimized, better focused on the topic and have been in existence a lot longer than your site has. How well established you site is does matter, especially with Google. The keyword phrases you choose must be what are commonly known as long-tailed. This generally means selecting phrases that comprise of three, four or more words, especially when there are high levels of competition in the market.
Using long-tail keyword phrases and related (relevant) phrases will yield much less traffic than "short-tail" phrases but the visitors you do receive are much more likely to be responsive to what you offer. Long-tail searchers are also more likely to be serious buyers looking for a web site to satisfy their particular needs and desires. Someone using the short-tail phrase "plasma tv" is more likely to be looking for information than buying. Someone using the long-tail phrase "120cm samsung plasma tv" is more likely to be a buyer or closer to being one. Statistics show that a digital storefront gets its revenue from repeat customers or first-time buyers who enter a long-tail keyword phrase. These surfers know what they want, and are often in buy mode. This is a good reason for focusing on long-tail keyword phases.
