Improved Search Engine Ranking - Part 2

There is more to improved search engine ranking than keyword density.

Part 1 of this SEO Ranking article is at:
Improved search engine ranking - Part 1

There are two basic ways to use this analyzer for improved search engine ranking. The 1st is to use the analyzer on your own web pages and the 2nd is to compare them to other pages currently with improved search engine ranking.

To use this keyword density analyzer, you click on the statistics tab and select the html file from its location on your hard drive.

Each of the keywords you have in the keywords meta tag on a page, will be listed with a key symbol next to it in the display column.

These are the words you need to use optimization upon to improve your search engine ranking.

If you click on the Percent header in the analyzer display column you can sort the listing so the words with the highest density will be at the top.

This is where all the keywords should be. If there not and words appear higher, you have some optimization to do.

The count column shows how many times a word appears on the page, also the total word count and the remaining columns show where the word is found i.e. Title, Header, Link text etc etc.

If you set up an external application under the options tab, you can click on 'Open File' and view the page in an html editor.

You must now increase the number of keywords in the page for those that need to be improved and decrease those that come higher in the analyzer list than your keywords.

This may take quite a time, especially if you didn't follow the design rules for improved optimization when you created the page.

Generally speaking you should aim to get your chosen words at a keyword density of at least 3% and have all other words, (except the ones the search engine ignores), below 1.5%.

This gives a distinct margin for error between the keywords and other words, so the search engine will have no confusion (error) over what the keywords are.

Some search engines may not read your meta tags, because they work out the keywords for themselves from the page content.

A keyword density of 2% is a minimum and you may need to get up to 5% or higher to compete with other pages already having an improved search engine ranking.

As part of the optimization process, the keywords should be spread over all areas of the page that the analyzer has identified. So look in all the analyzer columns and try to get no zero's for your keywords.

The 2nd phase of this optimization, is to go to the search engine for which you are optimizing and run a query for the exact phrase match on the keywords you are using.

In the search engine results, select various ranking positions, say no 1, 10, 20 & 30 and visit those sites. Save the web page to your hard drive under a file name that includes what ranking they had.

Now load those saved pages into the Compare window of the analyzer along with your own that you did the optimization for in phase 1.

At a glance you'll see how your page compares to the ones you are trying to compete with for improved ranking.

If the No 30 position already has a keyword density of 2% and so does yours, you may need to increase your keyword density to get an improved search engine ranking.

However remember that keyword density is not the only factor that gives improved search engine ranking.

Refer to Keyword Density - Getting the Right Result for some further insight on this. Pages at a lower keyword density can and do get a higher ranking because of other factors.

Ranking Optimization - GRkda Keyword Density Analyzer - Conclusions

Once you get use to the software and it can seem a little quirky to begin with, this analyzer proves itself to be a very useful tool in the arsenal of optimization tools for improved search engine ranking.

It does not make suggestions as to where to make improvements, its an analyzer not an optimizer and these are covered in other articles.

Improved keyword density without a tool like this is extremely difficult and takes far longer.

It does not guarantee you'll get improved search engine ranking, but you're not as likely to get them without it.

It will certainly stay in my toolkit until one better comes along.
