Search Engins
- Just How Do I Get Traffic ?

Are you listening to the wrong advice about search engins ?

You spent days, if not weeks on a new web site, then submitted it to the major search engins.

You have a great design, wrote some killer ad copy and included content to keep your visitors coming back. Sound familiar ?

Then, you wait a week...Wait another week... Wait a bit longer - Still not much traffic !

With search engins - are you taking the wrong advice ?

Having a web site is supposed to be the quick and easy way to profits, so most Internet marketers I've read and bought courses on will tell you.

Then you search for your domain name on all the submitted search engins, nope still can't be found.

Maybe, you use an SEO tools (assuming you know about one) to see if your site is indexed by the search engins you submitted to.

Just where did you go wrong ?

Well probably you didn't do anything wrong .. the reality is it can take 3-4 weeks, or more, for your site to be visited. So, what's the point of submitting to search engins ?

The fact is most smaller search engins don't crawl the web, they rely upon you submitting to them. But the major crawler type search engins like Google, Yahoo and MSN, prefer to find you on their own.

The only way they do that any quicker, is by them finding links to your site from web sites they already know about.

So, getting some links to your site early on is very important. It can make the difference between being indexed in a few days, rather than weeks.

You check your server logs for traffic each day, but the visitors are certainly not enough to make any decent sales, unless you can convert 20% of them to buyers... and that's not likely anytime soon.

So after a few weeks and a few links to your site, checking your web stats one day, you find Googlebot and Slurp have visited your site.

Sometime later another check with an SEO tool you find yourself indexed by the search engins, Google and Yahoo.

Now you're getting really excited

You rush to your favorite search engin browser to search for keywords you used in your Keyword Meta Tag. You look for page after page on the search results, but after 20 pages you give up. Perhaps you're listed for your other keywords .. you search, but find nothing.

You already know if you're not in the first 2 to 3 pages of results you're not going to get much traffic from the search engins.

Is this worth all the effort and anxiety ?

Why not just get visitors through paid ads (PPC) ? At least you know your site will be seen on the top results pages for your chosen keywords.

That sounds a lot easier ... you can spend less time worrying about your ranking, even if it costs you money.

Google won't let you do it

So, you read up on PPC set up some ad campaigns and submit them to Google Adwords. Sorry but you're told your landing page content doesn't match the keywords you want to be listed for.

Not only that you can't use the title and description listings you submitted. Google can seem very fussy, but you can appeal the decision.

So you check other Google Ads, why do other advertisers seem to have an Ad on every page for keywords that don't match what they are offering on their sites ?

Ever heard the saying 'money talks,' you can bet these are all big Ad spenders, like BizRate, Kelkoo, Dealtime and other shopping channels.

Welcome to the real world of making it on the WWW.

Ok, you've heard about search engine optimization, you know a bit about SEO, after all you've been to a few sites and seen some SEO software.

You could just buy some SEO software and get your site into the Top 20. Or perhaps get a firm to do the SEO .... and some guaranteed top listings.

Should I do the SEO, pay someone else to do it, or stick with PPC ?

If you've read anything else on my site, you'll know that no single piece of SEO software will get you guaranteed Top 20 placements.

No matter what the website sales page says, or the 90 day money back guarantee offered. It could take you longer than 90 days before you'd see a Top 20, and then only if you're in a low competition area.

Be very wary about SEO firms that make guarantees.

There is no such thing as a guaranteed top placement for any keyword or phrase you want, unless you have lots of money to spend and the time to wait. Neither of these is an option for most people with a new web site.

As for PPC it's a good way to get instant traffic once you have mastered getting the right ad titles and descriptions.

You also have to maintain a good click thro rate with Google Adwords PPC, or have to pay more for your keywords to get your Ad shown.

The click thro rate is the percentage of Ads clicked on to the total number of Ad impressions inserted on a search engins pages.

Competing on some PPC keywords can also get expensive and you must keep a close watch on your spending and the conversion rate of clicks to responses or purchases.

Click fraud can also be a problem. That's where people are paid to click on competitors Ad's to exhaust their PPC budget.

A recent research report from Equiro Search Solutions entitled " Into the Mind of the Searcher " also showed an increasing tendency for PPC Ads to be ignored, particularly on Google, but also on other SE's.

The truth about search engins - there's no quick way to get traffic

SEO can take a lot of time and effort with no guarantees for the success you might have expected. PPC can get you instant traffic but at a price and unless you are selling a product with a high enough margin, it may not be profitable in the long term.

Other traffic strategies also play a part, such as increasing link traffic, building a subscriber list, advertising on other web sites, in ezines and doing viral marketing etc.

So in answer to what you have to do to get traffic from the search engins or anywhere else, despite what many other people will tell you, for most website owners it usually takes time and a lot of hard work.

You should also not just rely upon SEO, you also need to use the other traffic building strategies I've mentioned.

Anyone that tells you different is being economical with the truth.
