segmentation targeting customers and visitors to your websiteWe seek website owners keen to improve their conversion rates for product offers or email opt-ins to take part in a case study Segmentation and targeting is a technique by which visitors to a website are segmented (split into different groups) and presented with different offers according to their expressed preferences, known as targeting. Through a process of segmentation and targeting of potential customers and site visitors it is possible to dramatically improve the conversion rate of visitors to buyers and/or visitors to subscribers of an email opt-in list. This improvement in conversion rate is made possible because visitors to a site are split into groups and presented with specific offers targeted at that group only. Offers are much more closely matched to that particular interest group and as a result, conversions increase. There are generally two stages in the segmentation process. The first stage segments the site visitor at the landing page into general categories, according to the product or service being offered. The visitor is presented with a simple question and their answer determines what interest group they are placed in for targeting or further segmentation at the next stage. The second stage of targeting involves presenting each segmented group with a further series of questions, or a fun quiz, which further determines visitor preferences. The final stage involves presenting the visitor with an offer that is specifically designed to cater to the interest of that target group.
