Web Site Layout
For the Search Engine Optimizer - Part 2

Web site layout turns into a brain teaser when you can't keep track of links between pages. That's when you need a link drawing.

One good example is the keyword generator section. It has 15 pages, linked & interlinked for the human visitor and the search engine's. The links all differ, so this makes a lot of links.

Each completed page of content written in Word was transferred into the web layout already designed in an HTML Editor.

Links between pages were created to match the link layout drawing.

Using SmartDraw I also created a web site layout Flowchart. In effect it's a top level site plan for the actual web site, as part of this search engine ranking optimisation process.

Create a web site layout with a few bullet points on each page, describing the web content. Think about what words in your description of each page best sum it up, then make these your initial keyword's.

They're only your first stab, and will very likely change later.

As the search engine optimizer on your web page layout aim to get two & three keyword phrases.

It's becoming very difficult to find single keyword's with enough searches and fewer competing pages, so there's more chance with two & three keyword phrases.

You should also aim for two phrases per web page layout.

For example if a web site sells "children's toys", the planned web site layout might include "child safe toys" or if made of wood "child's wooden toys". These words could be a keyword phrase.

Remember, aim to get one different keyword phrase per web page, two if possible, but don't lose sleep over it, if it's not possible.

It's very difficult, if not sometimes near impossible, to optimize a page for more than two phrases, so don't waste time trying to find more than this.

During the early stage they're just seed ideas. Go to the keyword generator section, see how to refine them and come up with many more keyword's & phrases you've probably never even thought of.

One other thing on the subject of web site layout is the use of a keyword's in the domain name of a web site.

If you can find an available domain name that reflects what the site's about and it's one of your high traffic keyword's or phrases then it can be an advantage. But if not, don't worry, it's not a big issue.

This initial planning's crucial to the success of a web site. So as the search engine optimizer, it's worth the time and effort thinking about it. Make it one of the first things to do.

Don't rush through this web site layout planning stage, just to get your site operating. Quality time spent in planning will be repaid later, many times over.

There's a saying, 'If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.' Think about that for a moment, then get working on a web site layout.
